Saint Paul (November, 2018): Mathew Janczewski brings his subtle, rich and viscerally honest choreographic voice to the Fitzgerald stage for a one-of-a-kind performance by ARENA DANCES. Through intimate movement and lush soundscapes, unravels a politically charged central theme: gun violence in America. Holding nothing back, the dancers tap into the emotional impact of this reality, blurring the lines between artistry and activism. Throughout the performance runs an undercurrent of hope—a sense that society is on the brink of learning the difficult lessons of the past, and could finally be ready to progress.

As part of this event, ARENA is partnering with local and national gun control and safety organizations- Mom’s Demand Action, Protect MN, and Survivors Lead. Representatives from these organizations will be present the night of the performance, encouraging conversation and providing information as part of a post show conversation.

4 Moving Pieces
hold my hand
The show’s title work is built on the score “Requiem” by Minnesota composer and 2018 McKnight Fellowship recipient, Joshua Clausen. Inspired by Sophie Chou’s sonification of gun violence statistics, the score will be performed live by MPLS (imPulse) choir led by Samuel Grace with special guest Soprano, Carrie Henneman Shaw. High school students from the surrounding area will perform alongside ARENA dancers for this stunning and impactful premier.

One Room
Also making its premier is a trio set to the experimental and contemplative music of Nils Frahm. This undulating exploration of movement builds to a climactic finish viewers won’t soon forget.

Run With Me
A popular work from the past—revitalized for today. Opening the show, this lush, sinuous men’s quartet is a display of immense physicality. Lightsey Darst for MN Artists called it “…vivid whirl, densely layered and evocative...with moments of crystalline clarity. Melancholic, romantic, dramatic and lovely.”

Threshold
Created in 2010, Threshold began as a women’s sextet and has since been performed by both men and women. With the fight for gender equality taking center stage in national conversation, now is an ideal time for this work to return to its roots with a cast of all-female dancers. Their movement is a meditation on the emotional space between leaving and entering, as if you’re on the brink of transforming—the future in sight, but not quite yet a reality.

National Solidarity Speakout

Too many of us have stories like Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s. Too many of us have never felt safe enough to share them. Dr. Blasey Ford has shown incredible courage coming forward about Brett Kavanaugh’s attempt to rape her 36 years ago. She has given us the courage to share our own stories.

Dr. Blasey Ford is scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee about her attempted rape on Thursday. That same day, on Thursday, September 27, survivors will gather at their Senators’ offices across the country and share their own testimonies of assault.

We expect Senator Amy Klobuchar and Senator Tina Smith to vote against Brett Kavanaugh's appointment to the Supreme Court. Join us on Thursday as we show our solidarity for Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, all survivors and make our expectation known. We will remember Senator Klobuchar and Senator Smith's votes come November when we cast ours.

Join us here in Minnesota at Senator Amy Klobuchar's office! Wear black and write “I BELIEVE” on your hands in marker.

Bring a letter asking your Senator to vote NO on Kavanaugh. We’ve written a sample letter that you can sign and deliver, or you can write your own!

The speak out and rally will begin at 12pm. At 12:30 pm, we’ll be holding a one minute of silence in solidarity with Dr. Blasey Ford and survivors everywhere who have been silenced for too long. During the minute of silence, hold your hands high to show the message “I BELIEVE” written on your palms. Senator Amy Klobuchar needs to knows that you, like millions of women, femmes, and allies, #BelieveChristine.

NOTE: We are making every effort to have crisis counselors available during the speakout. If you are a mental health professional, crisis counselor and sexual assault advocate and want to volunteer your time please e-mail Alicia at alicia@womensmarchmn.com. We recognize not everyone is in a place where they can or want to share their story of assault. That’s okay!! You don’t owe anyone a description of your trauma. We still believe you. Your story is still real, and it still matters, even if you aren’t able or do not want to share it.

Survivors Lead Launch and Fundraiser

We are proud to launch a new 100% survivor led violence prevention organization! Survivors Lead provides professional and peer support, advocacy and political training for Survivors of gun violence, sexual and domestic violence.
We take a municipality-based approach to curbing gun violence, focused on survivor-led efforts to end gun violence in our cities. We work with families and assist them in advocating for their murdered loved one in unsolved/active cases, provide survivor peer support throughout the trial process and beyond.

We are developing trainings to work with law enforcement to address police violence in communities of color, and offer political trainings to assist survivors of violence in running for public office.
